preparing to move home checklist
|
| |
4 Weeks before your move:
- Scout
around for some sturdy cardboard boxes or purchase suitable
packing materials.
- Label
the contents of your boxes and prepare a full packing list
for each box.
- Set
a firm date for moving based on the completion date for
the sale of your property.
- Select
an international removal service which best meets your
needs. Check your larger appliances and items of furniture
will fit in your new home. Do not take what you do not
need.
- Have
a thorough clean-out (you might want to organise a garage
sale).
- Start
to use the frozen and canned foods you've been storing.
- Keep
a list of incoming mail.
- Start
notifying businesses, colleagues and suppliers of your
intended move.
2 Weeks before your
move:
- Keep
packing or better still, have the professionals do the
job for you.
- Prepare
an inventory of everythin you're packing and store it
with your valuables.
- Make
sure appropriate insurance is in place for the move itself
and for your new home from the moment you buy it.
- Contact
the utilities you'll require at your new residence.
Last Days:
- Hopefully
you've packed just about everything!
- Cancel
local arrangements such as milk and newspaper deliveries
etc.
- Return
things like library books, videos etc.
- Have
a final clean-out to get rid of out-of-date cleaning products
and inflammables from under the kitchen sink and in the
garage. Dispose of opened paint tins, thinners etc.
- Defrost
and clean your fridge and freezer and allow to dry out.
- Have
a well earned drink and a farewell party for family and
friends.
On Moving Day:
- Consider
carrying with you the essential things you'll need when you
first arrive at your new home. Most importantly, make
sure you carry valuables, passports, flight
tickets, personal effects and important papers with
you, so they don't go astray.
- Final
check on all rooms to ensure that nothing has been left
behind.
- Before you leave
your old residence, make sure it's securely locked and all
keys deposited with the estate agents or
the new owners.
